2005 Deciendentes des J. Palacios Bierzo, “Petalos”

Region: Bierzo, Spain

Varietals: 100%  Mencia

Bierzo, a region in north western Spain, is home to the grape varietal Mencia. For years the local grapes from Bierzo were  thought to be Cabernet Franc, but DNA testing proved it to be Mencia. This wine is produced by one of the top winemakers in all of Spain, Alvaro Palacios.

The 2005 Petalos is extremely floral, with notes of raspberries, blackberries, and vanilla cola. It’s ripe fruit have great intensity, yet the wine is extremely elegant with a kiss of oak and plush tannins.

90 points Robert Parker / 90 Wine Spectator “Top 100 of 2007”
